Become a UBC Resident

You’ve matched as a UBC resident! Now how do you make it official?

Your first tasks are all about UBC. The UBC PGME Registration Guide provides great guidance through these steps and we provide some insider tips and insight through it all. We recommend completing the steps in this chapter as early as April. Let's get started.

  1. Set up Your UBC CWL Account

  2. Set up Your UBC Email Address

  3. Complete RMS Registration

  4. Complete UBC Student Registration

Before getting started, do you have your MRES number?

Your MRES number is your student number. You can find this in an email from UBC Enrolment Services (ubc.systems@ubc.ca) and/or UBC (rms.support@ubc.ca) PGME. You will need it before you can set up your UBC Campus Wide Login Account.

Resident Insight: Get Organized

We suggest some proactive organization! As you start to register and sign up for things, it’s a good idea to keep track of all your usernames and identification numbers in one secure place for easy reference. Use a note app like Evernote, OneNote, or Notability.

Here's a list of some of the usernames and IDs you'll be collecting over the next few months. You can copy and paste this into your secure note and fill it out as you go.

Set up your UBC Email Address

Before getting started, do you have your CWL account set up? You will need your CWL username and password. See the previous section on how to set this up.

Resident Insight: Access Your UBC Email on Your Phone

Accessing your UBC email on your mobile device is going to be crucial. You can access your UBC student email via any web browser: https://webmail.student.ubc.ca/ but this is not very practical for everyday use.

You have 3 options:

  1. Bookmark UBC Student Webmail on your phone and laptop
    • Pros: very easy
    • Cons: you won’t receive notifications so you will need to remember to check in often, not integrated with your personal email app
    • How: Simply bookmark UBC Student Webmail on your web browser. On your phone, you can add this bookmark to your home screen so you can more easily access it.
  2. Forward your UBC email addresses to your personal email
    • Pros: easy, works with every email service
    • Cons: you cannot reply using your UBC email address which may cause email chains to get messy, and make finding emails troublesome.
    • How: Follow the steps on UBC IT's website here
  3. Add your UBC email address to your desktop and mobile email applications
    • Pros: Better integration, able to reply using UBC email address
    • Cons: More steps
    • How: Follow the steps on UBC IT's website which we have linked below
    • Note: using third-party applications (ex. Spark) will work as long as you are given the option to set up an “Exchange” account. Simply, enter your UBC email address and UBC CWL password. Please note that you cannot add your UBC email address to the Gmail app.

Before getting started, do you have your CWL account and UBC email address? If not, please see the previous sections.

This section comprises of tasks that don’t really need to get done until later. However, it might also be a good idea to get this done and out of the way at this point so you can check off UBC Registration off the list.

Before getting started, do you have your CWL account? If not, please see the previous sections.

Insider Tip
